R&B Star Brandy Opens Up About Her Struggle With Depression

Singer, Brandy recently revealed that she’s been struggling with depression for years, and her daughter helped pull her through.

In an interview with People Magazine, Brandy was candid about her battle with depression that came with her rising fame. After becoming a child star at the age of 15 with hit records like “I Wanna Be Down” and a popular sitcom, Moesha, Brandy began to feel the pressures of being famous.

She felt like she had to maintain a perfect image while being in the spotlight, and it began to take a toll on her. At 41, Brandy has been in the public eye for almost three decades, and constantly being under a microscope has not been easy.

Back in 2006, Brandy was involved in a fatal car crash that claimed the life of a woman, and that only added to her depression. She even disclosed that she was suicidal as a result, but thinking of her daughter Sy’rai, now 18 years old, reminded her that she still had something to live for. “If Sy’rai wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be either,” she said.

After an eight-year hiatus, Brandy released her new album, B7, last month where she sings about some of her mental health struggles, especially on her lead single “Borderline.” Brandy’s transparency has helped her fans cope with their own struggles with mental illness, and they’ve expressed their gratitude to the singer for putting their feelings into words.

Brandy says she’s now in a better place and engages in therapy, meditation and journaling to help manage her depression, and fans are happy she’s on the journey to healing. Be sure to listen to B7, available on all streaming platforms, and catch all six seasons of Moesha, now streaming on Netflix.
