Malala Yousafzai, a recent graduate from Oxford University and Pakistani activist for women’s education, just launched her first book club, which will begin on October 1.

Yousafzai, who was nearly murdered in October of 2012 at the young age of 15 for her attempts to start an organization to help young girls obtain an education in Pakistan, has always been a bookworm. In 2019, she published her own young adult book entitled We Are Displaced: My Journey and Stories from Refugee Girls Around the World in which she allowed 79.5 million young women to share their experiences.

In starting her book club, Yousafzai has told Bustle that she has similar aims, “My hope is that readers join to explore new ideas and voices in the literary world. And I hope it’s a moment of empowerment for the authors.” Yousafzai announced the exciting news about her new book club in a post on Instagram.

Yousafzai also stated that she had recently created a book club for her friends in India and Pakistan, and had been reading a lot since the quarantine began. She told Bustle that her favorite book ever is The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. She also mentioned that her favorite genre to read is non-fiction, and specifically enjoys reading autobiographies. Yousafzai stated that as of right now, she is reading, Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge and Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World by Anand Giridharadas.

The young activist has also been in the news lately for talking about how her graduation from Oxford a few months ago was not what she expected it to be, due to the global pandemic. She also recently made headlines for speaking out in favor of the Black Lives Matter movement and encouraged people to continue to fight against injustice on her Twitter.

Since her youth, Yousafzai has stood up in the face of injustice and demanded change, and continues to do so today. Go ahead and join her book club called Fearless with Literati so you can read with this brave young woman and also reflect on how you can fight for what is right.
