Black Lives Matter Protests Erupt in Wisconsin in Support of Jacob Blake

29-year-old Jacob Blake was shot by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday, August 23.

Police claim that they were responding to a domestic incident call in the area that night. Many witnesses took photos and videos. Well-known civil rights attorney Ben Crump claims that Blake was seen in one video walking to his car while his children were inside the vehicle. One police officer was seen grabbing Blake’s shirt and then shot Blake a total of seven times. Fortunately, Blake was not killed, he was rushed to a hospital in Milwaukee where he is being treated, and has received surgery, but is in critical condition. Many of Blake’s loved ones have taken to social media to keep people updated on Blake’s condition.

Wisconsin’s governor, Tony Evers, made an official statement on Sunday, showing his support for Jacob Blake and his family and friends. The police officers involved in the shooting have been dismissed on administrative leave, but people are demanding they be fired. The DCI is currently leading an investigation into the shooting, working with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol.

While all the details have not been released, protesters are appalled due to what happened to Blake, demanding justice and equality for Black lives. Kenosha issued a curfew, though protesters continued to take to the streets surrounding the Kenosha County Public Safety Building. Several vehicles were set on fire and windows were smashed, resulting in SWAT vehicles and police officers in riot gear, letting off tear gas into crowds of protesters.
