5 Seconds of Summer drummer, Ashton Irwin is releasing a solo album.

Though he is still with the band, Irwin is venturing out to discover his musical individuality. He is the first in the group to release a solo project. We don’t know for sure, but his new-found individuality could inspire his bandmates to do the same. All we know is 5SOS fans will surely be excited.

In 2020 5SOS has dropped: “No Shame”, “Old Me”, and “Wildflower” along with a studio album entitled CALM. Irwin has, no doubt, been extremely busy releasing solo music and music with his band.

Superbloom is said to release next month on October 23. Today, he will release the album’s first single, “Skinny Skinny.” The song is about body image and particularly body dysmorphia. Hopefully, this song will start a chain of personal and soul touching songs from his upcoming album. As a solo album, he is crossing territory he hasn’t had the chance to explore creatively.

It is with a great explosion of joy and with my entire soul that I am proudly announcing to you all that I am releasing my first solo record. The album explores my inner philosophies and feelings about the walk of life I have found myself on. I’m ridiculously excited to share this with you, it feels like this record has been over a decade in the making. It brings me the greatest joy of all that I am in a band that allows me to create freely inside and outside of it. I can’t wait for you to hear it. You can pre-order my debut solo album ‘Superbloom’ out October 23rd everywhere tonight. Pre-save now from the link in my profile. The first single “Skinny Skinny” is out everywhere tonight at 9pm PT. We must fight against a common darkness that shadows our ability to live truthfully, to live without self doubt, and without self destruction and love ourselves for what we are. When writing “Skinny Skinny” I first thought of myself, and many other young peoples struggles with body image and particularly body dysmorphia. It’s something I’ve never confronted in a creative form and I am feeling strong in saying “Skinny Skinny” goes directly to that painful place in my mind.

The best part of everything is that his band members are incredibly supportive of Irwin’s solo work. “It brings me the greatest joy of all that I am in a band that allows me to create freely inside and outside of it,” Irwin wrote on Twitter.

Since Irwin is the drummer in his current band, many 5SOS fans were shocked to hear of his new album where he will be singing. It was a pleasant surprise, to say the least. His fans and bandmates are supportive of his music and incredibly excited to see what he has in store.
