California recently announced its plan to ban the sales of gas-powered cars in 2035 in an attempt to combat climate change.

With the current West Coast wildfires, hyperactive hurricane seasons, and melting of the Arctic, it’s no secret that climate change is a major issue that is affecting our planet and everyone on it. Even with ample evidence, some still deny that climate change is real and many politicians have not taken any action to help prevent its destruction.

California Governor Gavin Newsom wants to be one of the politicians that actually uses his position to fight climate change. On Wednesday he signed an order (on the hood of an electric car) that will ban the sales of new gas-powered cars by 2035, which aims to reduce the number of gas emissions the state produces.

Governor Newson’s order is a big step in the right direction and the first of its kind in the US, while the option has already been proposed in other countries like France, Norway, and Denmark. With the rise in sales of Teslas and other more affordable electric cars, Newson’s order can easily be met.

Many are praising his decision and hope that other states will soon follow suit. With the highest state population in the country, Newson says transportation is responsible for more than half of the state’s carbon pollution, and he says the ban will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35%.

Just this week the Climate Clock was unveiled in New York City, which counts down the amount of time left until the Earth’s carbon budget is emptied. As of Monday at 1:30 p.m., the clock says we have seven years, 101 days, 17 hours, 29 minutes, and 22 seconds left.

Hopefully, Newson’s order will inspire other politicians to propose similar plans in order to combat climate change. We are seeing the destruction of our planet happen before our eyes and in order to change our planet and create a better future for ourselves and the generations to come, we must act quickly.
