In a recent interview with Vogue, singer-songwriter, Lizzo voiced her opinions about the Breonna Taylor case and the Democratic vice presidential nominee, Kamala Harris.

Both through her music and on her social media, Lizzo has always been an advocate for the rights of women and people of color and has celebrated independence and diversity. Since the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless other innocent people of color, Lizzo has been far from silent about what we as a community need to do in response to this unjust police brutality. She took to her Instagram to address fans directly and speak her mind.

In this interview with Claudia Rankine, Lizzo discussed growing up as a black girl in America, finding her way into the music industry, and finding her voice that she is known for today. She talks at length about growing up in Detroit and Houston, finding her sisters, and paving her long and windy path in the music industry. Lizzo’s main message in her music and her overall platform is that everyone is beautiful and deserving of respect and rights. She focuses on women’s rights, body positivity, and justice for all.

When Rankine asked about her thoughts about Harris, Lizzo said, “Having a Black woman as vice president would be great. I’m just always rooting for Black people. But I want actual change to happen. In the laws. Not a temporary fix to a deep-rooted, systemic issue.” She continued her thoughts about supporting black women by talking about those who often get “dropped from the conversation,” and stated, “We need to talk about the women” in reference to Breonna Taylor and others.

Lizzo concluded the interview by discussing her goal for young people when she said, “I just want to encourage people to register to vote. That is the most important thing to me. Because there’s a lot of upset people, and there’s a lot of people who have power. There’s a lot of voter suppression in Black communities. But there’s a lot of angry white kids now. And I’m like, ‘Yo, register to vote. Go out. You won’t get suppressed if you try to go to your ballot box.’ You know? I think it’s important to remind people of what they can do. My job isn’t to tell you how to vote. But my job is hopefully to inspire you to vote…to activate you, so that you can take your protest to the ballot box.”
