Justin Bieber performed his new songs “Holy” and “Lonely” on Saturday Night Live, marking the fourth time he has appeared on the NBC comedy hit.

Issa Rae, an actress, known for her leading roles in Insecure and Awkward Black Girl, hosted this episode and introduced Bieber. Both of his performances were very emotional and gave fans insight into another side of him. Sometimes we forget about the person behind to song, but Bieber combined the two.

A blue cross illuminated the stage and set the tone for his performance of “Holy,” which is about his religion and wife Hailey Baldwin. Bieber was surrounded by lush and untamed branches, giving it a mysterious vibe. He was joined by Chance the Rapper, who was featured on the song.

For his second and most recent song, “Lonely,” Bieber started in his dressing room and moved through the hallowed halls of Studio 8H until he makes it on the stage. This shows the behind the scenes and emotion Bieber experienced from rising to fame at such a young age.

In an Instagram post, the singer shared about the process of writing “Lonely.” “To be honest, the song is hard for me to listen to considering how tough it was to get through some of these chapters,” Bieber wrote. “I believe it is powerful to express vulnerability, and that’s why I believe this song is so powerful.”

When Bieber was younger, he performed on the SNL stage. Bieber has made a full circle from a young child singer to singing about being a young child. To many SNL fans delight, they have seen him grow into the person who stands before them.

We appreciate Justin for showing us a different side of him, and we are proud of what he has become. Make sure to check out both performances and stream “Holy” and “Lonely.”
