Almost 20 years after the release of the cult classic Legally Blonde, fans are finally getting production news and the reveal of the long-awaited release month for the third installment.

On Tuesday night, the film’s studio, MGM, announced that Legally Blonde 3 will officially debut in May 2022.  The news was revealed after Reese Witherspoon arranged a virtual cast reunion on her company YouTube channel, Hello Sunshine. For the event, Witherspoon gathered with her former castmates to raise money for the charity organization World Central Kitchen.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the film was rumored to premiere on February 4 of this year but was quietly pushed back due to the ongoing pandemic. In May, Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were tapped to write the screenplay for the movie with Witherspoon set to reprise her role as Elle Woods. MGM has yet to announce a director for the film and has worked to keep the film synopsis under wraps, including casting information.

In 2003, the sequel, titled Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, welcomed back a few original cast members alongside Witherspoon, including Jennifer Coolidge and Luke Wilson. Coolidge and Wilson are expected to tag along for the newest installment as well.

During the reunion, Witherspoon became emotional when speaking about the impact the first film has had on audiences. “This was my college. This is where I went to college. I didn’t finish college but I finished Legally Blonde,” Witherspoon said. “We all worked together and made this movie together that has inspired so many young people. It’s just such a gift… Every time people come up to me and tell me they love this movie, I give it all to you, I share it all with you all.”

A specific release date within May 2022 has yet to be revealed. You can watch the full Legally Blonde cast reunion here.
