The film, starring Elba and Stranger Things star McLaughlin, centers around a 15-year-old boy named Cole, played by McLaughlin. Cole relocates to Philadelphia to live with his father Harp, played by Elba, and it’s there where he discovers urban horseback riding.

The film is inspired by a real-life cowboy and the novel “Ghetto Cowboy” by Gregory Neri. The film also stars rapper Method Man, Lorraine Toussaint, and When They See Us and Moonlight star Jharrel Jerome. The film is directed by Ricky Staub and produced by Elba and Lee Daniels.

Many don’t know that the first American cowboys were Black since their history has been whitewashed and inaccurately told, and Elba has expressed his gratitude to be able to help tell the story of the original Black cowboys. “It feels really apt to be able to tell a part history that’s been definitely buried, and in the case of ‘Concrete Cowboy,’ that history is right now,” says Elba.

Fans of both Elba and McLaughlin are excited to be able to see the film, and those who’ve already seen it are happy that they’ll get to rewatch it. Be sure to watch out for Concrete Cowboy, which will be coming to Netflix in 2021.
