New MGM Adaptation of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ To Be Directed by Thomas Kail
A new MGM film adaptation of the legendary 1960’s musical Fiddler on the Roof is set to be directed by Thomas Kail, the director of the acclaimed Broadway musical Hamilton.
The musical was written by Joseph Stein, featuring music composed by Jerry Bock and Don Walker, and lyrics written by Sheldon Harnick. It depicts the story of a family of Jews living in Russia. There have been many different revivals and adaptations of the beloved musical, with the most recent Broadway revival of the show was in 2015 and featured an all-star cast including actor Danny Burstein and actresses Alexandra Silber, Samantha Massell, Jessica Hecht, and Melanie Moore.

Kail is set to direct and produce the new feature film adaptation and work closely with scriptwriter Steven Levenson, who is known for his work writing the Fosse/Verdon TV series. Dan Jinks, the producer, and Aaron Harnick, the nephew of lyricist Sheldon Harnick, will also be involved in the project. The cast list and release date for the film has not yet been released.
In addition to his work directing Hamilton, Kail is also known for directing Lin Manuel-Miranda’s musical In the Heights, as well as a few episodes of the FX short series Fosse/Verdon. Musical theatre fans have voiced their excitement on Twitter about the upcoming film adaptation.
