Netflix’s New Series ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ Is a Must-Watch
The new Netflix show, The Queen’s Gambit, is receiving raving reviews and is inspiring more people to learn about the classic game of chess.
Netflix’s latest original series, The Queen’s Gambit, premiered last month, and it’s currently the number one show on the streaming platform. Many are even saying it’s Netflix’s best show this year as it continues gaining praise for its stellar acting and amazing cinematography.
The show is based on the 1983 novel by Walter Tevis, and it centers around the life of Elizabeth “Beth” Harmon, who’s played by Split and The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy.
Beth becomes an orphan as an eight-year-old when her mother dies in a car crash, and she is then sent off to live in an orphanage in hopes of being adopted by a new family.
It is there where her love for chess begins. She discovers the orphanage janitor playing it in the basement, and he eventually teaches her the ins and outs of the game. The orphanage is also where Beth’s substance addiction begins, and it continues haunting her as she becomes an adult.
Queen’s Gambit was captivating and I hold chess up there with watching golf and paint drying. Its a must see.

In the midst of her troubled childhood, Beth uses chess as a form of escape. As one of the only female chess players, she eventually learns to master it at such a young age and spends nearly her entire life training to beat the world’s best chess player Vasily Borgov, played by Marcin Dorociński.
