Demi Lovato Encourages Awareness About Decolonizing Thanksgiving
Singer and actress Demi Lovato posted on her Instagram about decolonizing Thanksgiving and here’s what you need to know.
The star, who is known for her work in the Disney movie Camp Rock and her songs “Made in the USA,” and “Here We Go Again,” posted on her Instagram about the importance of decolonizing Thanksgiving in an effort to educate her fans. In collaboration with the Instagram account @soyouwanttotalkabout, Lovato shed some light on the real story of Thanksgiving, rather than the whitewashed version.
In her post, Lovato discussed how Indigenous communities have suffered racism and prejudice since colonization, and have endured more harm due to the whitewashed Thanksgiving tale that has been popularized and spread. In revealing the true story of Thanksgiving, the singer quoted The New York Times, the Huffington Post, and writer James Baldwin. She also partnered with the NDN Collective and the Showing Up For Racial Justice Organization for this post.

Many celebs joined Lovato this year in speaking out about understanding the history of Thanksgiving. Gigi Hadid shared her insights on how to celebrate while still acknowledging the truth of this holiday.
Happy Thanksgiving 💛 be grateful today and everyday. Also remember that American land was taken from the Indigenous Peoples. Honor them today through acknowledgment and education of that genocide.
