Big Sean and Jhené Aiko’s ‘Body Language’ Music Video Was a Homage to Black Films
Big Sean’s new music video featuring Jhené Aiko, his girlfriend, and Ty Dolla $ign tipped Janet Jackson’s iconic cabbie hat to films such as Poetic Justice, Love Jones, The Best Man, and Waiting to Exhale.
The side-by-side comparison is uncanny, and the music video as a whole sends you back in time, as it’s a huge nostalgia trip. The two referenced Poetic Justice in their roles as a postal worker and salon employee. Sean opened the video in a kitchen, a parallel to Love Jones, while Aiko has the well-known cab conversation. Ty Dolla $ign pops up throughout the video but stands out the most at the end during the bachelor party, just like in The Best Man. Aiko was also seen setting fire to a car, like in Waiting to Exhale.

We also have to consider that Sean and Aiko are dating in real life, and the fact that they have on and off-screen chemistry, the whole music video becomes elevated and deeper. The duo was able to transpose their romantic life into their professional artistic careers, and the combination was what the video needed.

“Body Language” is a song on Sean’s fifth album, Detroit 2, released back in September of this year. All in all, the smooth and soulful song was able to develop through the video, and the fans are no doubt excited to see a glimpse of the two artists’ relationship, even if it’s expressed through film recreation.
