Actress Yara Shahidi and her mom, Keri Shahidi, launch their production company 7th Sun Productions with the comedy series Smoakland.

As Freeform begins work with 7th Sun Productions to develop this single-camera show, Jewel Coronel and Zahir McGhee will join the mother-daughter duo. Coronel was the writer for The Chi, while McGhee was a consulting producer on Scandal. Coronel, McGhee, Yara, and Keri Shahidi will all be executive producers on Smoakland as part of the deal struck with ABC Studios.

Smoakland plans to follow Solo, the main character, on her journey to open a cannabis company. It will also go into the personal obstacles she faces on the path of attaining her dream. This will explore the ‘budding’ cannabis industry from the eyes of a young woman from Oakland.

Yara is most well known for her role as Zoey Johnson on the family show, Black-ish, and the spinoff that focuses on her college friends, Grown-ish. Both shows are on Freeform and are known for the fresh ideas they explore that have society and their mass amount of viewers re-thinking their place in society, in a positive way.

Fans are eagerly waiting for the premiere date, but in the meantime, Yara will be seen later this month for the continuation of Grown-ish‘s season three that was put on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yara will also be starring as Tinker Bell in the feature film, Peter Pan and Wendy, which is premiering sometime this year.
