Zach Braff will join Gabrielle Union in the upcoming Disney+ film, Cheaper by the Dozen.

The film is a reimagining of the classic 1948 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, written by siblings Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. The book was later adapted into two films: Cheaper by the Dozen (1950) with Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy and Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) with Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt. Each of those films resulted in a sequel, Belles on Their Toes in 1952 and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 in 2005.

Disney announced the film as part of the Disney Investor Day presentation where the company showcased the lineup for the next few years. However, at the time, the only actor cast was Union.

The 2003 adaptation’s director, Shawn Levy, will serve as executive producer alongside Union. Gail Lerner, executive producer of Black-ish, will direct the project while Kenya Barris and Jenifer Rice-Genzuk, also executive producers for Black-ish, will write the film’s screenplay.

Unlike the previous films, this version of the story will feature a multiracial and blended family while sticking to the original plot of the parents (Braff and Union) trying to find a balance between managing a 14 person household and running a family business.

The rights to original intellectual property and four subsequent films originally belonged to 20th Century Fox but following Disney’s 2019 acquisition of the production company, all rights went to Disney.

The film is set to hit the Disney+ streaming service at some point in 2022.
