Trailblazers of Female Hip-Hop, Salt-N-Pepa, Celebrated In New Lifetime Film
Lifetime presents new biopic honoring the work of hip-hop legends, Salt-N-Pepa.
The film, Salt-N-Pepa, which aired on January 23 on Lifetime Network, depicts the trials and tribulations of Cheryl James and Sandra Denton, two nursing students at Queensborough Community College who bonded over their schooling and a part-time job at Sears over their love of music. Later on, a third member, DJ Spinderella, entered, forming a trio.
Salt-N-Pepa is a Grammy-award-winning female hip-hop group that trailblazed the future of female rap. The group was keen to make their voices heard about sex and men, which was not nearly as common then as it is today. Salt-N-Pepa reached max popularity in the late ’80s and have only continued to blast hit after hit. Tracks like Let’s Talk About Sex, What a Man, Shoop, and Push It are all performed in the film.

The ladies of Salt-N-Pepa trailblazed the male-dominated genre of hip-hop by busting rhymes with R&B undertones and snazzy beats. Being one of the first female rap groups certainly wasn’t easy, and the film highlights the struggles they faced. It’s apparent that through their hard-working demeanor and talent, they prevailed.
According to Forbes Magazine, the group has sold over 15 million records worldwide, and in 2021 they’ll receive both a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
