‘I May Destroy You’ Snubbed of Rightfully Deserved Golden Globe Nomination
Hit HBO series, I May Destroy You, was unfortunately not included in 2021’s Golden Globe nominations, massively disappointing fans.
I May Destroy You is a vibrant and impactful series that showcases the experience of sexual assault. The leading lady, Michaela Coel, starred in the series and additionally was the program creator and writer. Many fans were blown away by her performance in the role.
The 12-episode-journey follows Arabella (Michaela Coel), a care-free, bright, and spontaneous writer whose world is turned upside down when her drink is spiked at a bar. She wakes up the next day with no recollection of the night before but knows that something is terribly wrong. With the help of her two best friends Terry (Weruche Opia) and Kwame (Paapa Essiedu), she navigates the unknown terrain known as drug-facilitated sexual assault (roofied or date rape).
The #GoldenGlobes nominations are in, and they’re… disappointing.

No nominations for ‘I May Destroy You’ nor Michaela Coel.
No nominations for Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollett.
No nominations for Uzo Aduba.
But yeah, ‘Emily In Paris’ is up for ‘Best Television Series.’ pic.twitter.com/msVCryyh8k
Coel’s character undergoes pain, frustration, and anger in her journey. As she’s forced to reevaluate every aspect of her life from career, friends, and family she buckles down and tries her best to make the most of the situation and embrace the suck of it. It certainly wasn’t easy by any means, but the most beautiful part of the show is how she shines through the obstacles to blossom into a more beautiful, forgiving, and understanding human being.
“I May Destroy You” is one of the most beautiful greatest realest funniest stressful heart-warming series I’ve ever watched in my life. It can top everything in my mind right now. Michaela Coen is so brilliant. It really pissed me off goldy globy. pic.twitter.com/HfTDqxGDUe

Fans on Twitter are outraged that the series didn’t receive any of the credit due. According to The Guardian, a writer for Emily In Paris, said, “I’m a writer on Emily in Paris. I May Destroy You deserved a Golden Globe nomination’. The Netflix comedy Emily In Paris received a nomination, while I May Destroy You did not. Many people feel since the series discussed tough topics and daring situations it showcased a larger issue at hand within the Golden Globes nominee selection.
Snubbing Micaela Cole/’I May Destroy You’ and nominating Lily Collins/’Emily in Paris’ is yet another example of how there are two sets of rules for Black and white people in this country. The mediocrity, my god.

No it’s actually CRIMINAL to not recognize Michaela Coel for what she did, not just w trauma or sexual assault or consent, but w friendship and art and power and healing! I May Destroy You was an artist executing a singular vision, pure and focused #GoldenGlobes
