Timothée Chalamet played Edgar Scissorhands, son of Edward Scissorhands in a Cadillac-themed Super Bowl commercial.

The Super Bowl is not just a day to celebrate football and tailgate… millions choose to tune in to the Super Bowl for its commercials. Perhaps the most popular commercial of the night starred 25-year-old Timothée Chalamet as Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder’s son Edgar from the beloved 1990 film, Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton.

Fans have long noticed the uncanny resemblance Chalamet has to Depp in this iconic film. Unfortunately, Depp does not appear in the Cadillac-themed “sequel” commercial, but Winona Ryder does. Ryder reprised her role as Kim and wore her signature blonde wig.

Ryder provides much of the voice-over in the commercial. The ad playfully begins with, “This is the story of a boy with scissors for hands… no, not that one.” Viewers are then taken on a journey of Edgar’s similarities to his father. Not only has he inherited his father’s scissor-hands, but he also experiences bouts of loneliness like his father had: He deflates a football and his creativity is not encouraged as he is told to “stick with the menu” at his job, and he is denied riding on the bus.

Edgar’s life of solitude comes to an end when Kim (Ryder’s character) buys a Cadillac LYRIQ, which is an electric car that has hands-free steering. This allows Edgar to drive, and in a sweet moment, viewers see him smile for the first time. The ad ends with Kim saying, “And Edgar drove off into the sunset.”

For those that have not seen the 1990’s fantasy film, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Edward Scissorhands is streaming now on Hulu.
