On February 7, Joe Biden sat down with Norah O’Donnell of CBS to give his first network interview since taking office.

After an election season that felt like it would never end, Joe Biden has officially taken office as the 46th President of the United States of America. President Biden was sworn in almost four weeks ago, on January 20, and began his work as President just a few hours after his inauguration. This past Sunday on February 7, he sat down for his first network interview as President.

In his interview, President Biden shared his plans for reopening schools and possibly using large stadiums for COVID-19 vaccination sites. O’Donnell and Biden converse about the question everyone has been asking the past year, when will things get back to normal again? Dr. Fauci, the newly appointed chief medical advisor to President Biden, says that 75% of Americans need to be vaccinated before our nation can reach some degree of normality. Dr. Fauci and President Biden hope that we, as a nation, can be 75% vaccinated by this time next year.

O’Donnell questioned Biden on the topic of reopening schools. Over 20 million American children have not been in the classroom for over a year. Being out of the classroom has not only affected their academic performance but their mental health. Biden says he agrees that it is time to reopen schools, but safely. President Biden feels for the emotional toll kids in America have had to pay due to COVID-19. One of the executive orders President Biden signed on his first day was to prioritize reopening schools within the first 100 days in office. The President is hoping Congress will approve $170 billion for K-12 schools and colleges to help them operate safely in person. The money would be apart of his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package.

Anxious Americans wait for President Biden’s next steps regarding COVID-19 and the reopening of schools. We, along with everyone, hope it is sooner than later, though the safety of Americans will always come first. Let’s work together to safely open America back up and find our new normal in life.
