Fans Celebrate R&B Artist the Weeknd Turning 31
Fans across the internet celebrate Grammy award-winning artist the Weeknd on his 31st birthday.
On February 16, 1990, Abel Tesfaye, known to the public as the Weeknd, was born in Toronto, Canada. Since then, he has become a leading artist in the music industry. One of his career’s most significant accomplishments occurred earlier this month when he headlined the 2021 Superbowl halftime show. Though, in honor of his 31st birthday, we want to reflect on his success journey that led him to headline such a pivotal event in America.

The Weeknd has released six studio albums and has worked with some of the music industry’s most outstanding singers today. He first entered the music scene with his nine-track mixtape titled House of Balloons. It was available for free download and released under XO and Island Records. In 2012, Trilogy was re-released with music from his earlier mixtapes. The album became a platinum-selling record earning the Weeknd headlines. In 2013, he released the ten-track album Kiss Land. The Weeknd was quiet until 2015 when he released the hit single “Earned It” as part of the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack. The single peaked at No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy award for Best R&B Performance at the 58th annual Grammy awards.

Along with his single in 2015, the Weeknd released his album Beauty Behind The Madness. The album peaked at No.1 on the Billboard 200 for three consecutive weeks and was in the top ten for a total of 21 weeks. The album won a Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album. He continued to grow in his success by releasing his fourth studio album, Starboy, in 2016. With no surprise, Starboy peaked at No.1 on the Billboard 200 within the first week of its release. The album won a Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album, making him the first artist in history to win the award twice.

He has released two more albums after Starboy. In 2020 he released My Dear Melancholy, and in 2021 he released After Hours. Again, with no surprise, both albums peaked at No.1 on the Billboard 200. After Hours made history for peaking at No.1 on Billboard’s 200, Hot 100, and Artist 100 all at once, it is set for him to begin his world tour for his album After Hours in January of 2022.
