The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Announce They Will No Longer Serve As Working Members Of The Royal Family
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced that they are no longer tied to their responsibilities with the royal family.
On Friday, February 19, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry informed the Queen and the general public that they would not be working members of the royal family. Meghan and Harry wed in May 2018 after two years of dating, and in May of 2019, the couple welcomed their first child, Archie. This news has been a long time coming since the couple departed from the UK to reside in the United States in January of 2020, leaving their full-time position as royals.

Many were shocked at the couple leaving England and are now even more shocked that they won’t be working members of the royal family. Others are not that entirely surprised and had seen it coming.

They stepped back from royal duties last year after racist and sexist attacks on Markle by the British media. pic.twitter.com/Dcnac8m9bc
The primary reason for leaving the royal duties is because of the British media’s heinous Meghan attacks. She experienced an ongoing cycle of hate about her race. Meghan is half white and half African American, making her the first biracial and African American ever to become British royalty.
According to NBC News, “Soon came headlines, however, commenting on Meghan’s ‘exotic DNA,’ and how she was ‘(almost) straight outta Compton.’ A BBC presenter was fired for tweeting a picture of a chimpanzee and likening it to the couple’s son, Archie. And Princess Michael of Kent — who is married to the queen’s first cousin — wore a blackamoor brooch when she met Meghan for the first time.” Meghan has since filed a privacy lawsuit against British tabloid Mail and won.

According to USA Today, Markle spoke out against the tabloid Mail for ‘dehumanizing practices’. “For these outlets, it’s a game,” her statement said. “For me and so many others, it’s real life, real relationships, and very real sadness. The damage they have done and continue to do runs deep.”
Now that Meghan and Harry are freed of their royal duties, titles, and obligations, they hope to live a happy and private life with their family and young son.
