Daniel Kaluuya Wins His First Golden Globe for His Portrayal of Fred Hampton in ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’
Daniel Kaluuya takes home his first Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah.
Kaluuya won the first award of the night at the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which was hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. It was the first-ever bi-coastal show, taking place in both New York City and Los Angeles, and winners were announced by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Kaluuya won in the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture category following his outstanding performance as Fred Hampton, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in the 60s. Kaluuya has been highly praised for his spot-on portrayal of Hampton since the film’s release last month.
The show got off to a rocky start due to technical difficulties at the beginning of Kaluuya’s speech, causing him to be muted. “You’re doing me dirty,” he joked once the issue was fixed.

Kaluuya has spoken in great detail about his preparation for the role, fully immersing himself in character by spending time in Chicago neighborhoods and getting to know Hampton’s son Fred Hampton Jr. “The great Nipsey Hussle says, ‘We are here to give until we are empty,’ and I gave everything,” he said in his speech.

Kaluuya made sure to highlight Hampton’s importance and the legacy he left, which wasn’t spoken about often prior to the film. “I hope generations after this can see how brilliantly he fought, how brilliantly he spoke, and how brilliantly he loved,” he said.
