The Golden Globe Ambassadors are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association because they are a child or pair of children from someone who has had a great impact on the film industry.  For example, previous ambassadors include Rumor Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, and Isan Elba daughter of Idris and Kim Elba.

Spike Lee’s children have followed in their father’s footsteps, both attending NYU for film and television where their father currently teaches. Their mother Tonya Lewis Lee is also a known television and film producer. Jackson Lee has worked on short films and is currently starting a creative agency. His sister, Satchel Lee, is a writer, filmmaker, producer, and all-around creative who is also the first openly queer Golden Globe Ambassador.

Each ambassador gets to donate $25,000 to a charity of their choice, each child chose a charity close to them. Jackson picked Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to improve arts education and mentorship for participants while Satchel chose Callen-Lorde, an LGBT organization to help pay for medical needs. According to the New York Times, Satchel was extremely enthusiastic about this cause because she knows that going to the doctor as an LGBT youth can be a scary experience and wants to ensure care is an option.

On the notion of being the first Black children to be ambassadors, Satchel stated, “We’re excited to be the first siblings of color. We’ll do it, so then you don’t have to say this again, because there’s going to be way more.” We are inspired to see the first Black and queer Golden Globe ambassadors and hope this encourages more inclusion within the film industry.
