CHUNG HA Drops New Spanish Music Video ‘Demente’
CHUNG HA released the Spanish music video of her song “Demente” with Puerto Rican rapper Guaynaa on March 17. “Demente” is one of the many Latin-infused tracks scattered throughout her discography. With the release of the “Querencia” album, CHUNG HA has talked about wanting to explore a return to her childhood in Austin, Texas. As a child, she’d visit her friends’ house and was surrounded by bits and pieces of Mexican culture. She was unable to understand the Spanish songs that were played nor was she able to comprehend what her friend’s family members were saying. Nevertheless, she fell in love with the culture and the people.
CHUNG HA began creating solo music after the disbandment of girl group I.O.I, a product of Produce 101. Her solo career has been much more experimental and pushes the creative envelope. CHUNG HA’s daring collaboration with Latino musicians has given life to this hybrid style and spawned “Querencia.”

Her “Demente” music video is a departure from the retro concepts expressed in the recent “Bicycle” and “Stay Tonight” videos. Instead, it is replaced by a classy, extravagant version of herself. She is often shown by herself, walking through the halls of an ornate hotel or ballroom. The lyrics reflect what is being shown in the music video. It strongly suggests being left alone or abandoned while waiting for love.
“Cada vez que me acerco tu amor se escapa/Y me dejas toda sola empapada/ Con las lágrimas como llamas,” are lines that are repeated consistently throughout the song. They translate to, “Every time I get closer your love runs away/And you leave me all on my own, soaked/With tears like flames.”
CHUNG HA tries to get closer and closer to the one that she loves, but they run away too fast. However, the MV does not give off the feeling of one being let down. She may be alone in this hotel but ultimately tries to enjoy herself and stray far from any negative emotions.
I’ve said this like eight hundred times but thank you chungha for demente. I can literally listen to it whenever. Brilliant.

Although there is an emphasis on desperation for one’s love and attention, it ends on a somewhat positive note. CHUNG HA is not willing to continue asking herself whether her love does or does not want to be with her. She puts herself in control by stating that the future of their relationship is determined by her decision to stay or to leave.
