Captivating Film ‘Nomadland’ Collects Six Academy Award Nominations
Six-time Academy Award-nominated film, Nomadland, directed by Chloé Zhao and based on Jessica Bruder’s non-fiction book, is now available in theaters and Hulu. Nomadland has been called one of the best movies this year. The film centers around a sixty-year-old woman, Fern, who is played by Frances McDormand. She embarks through the American West after losing everything in the Great Recession. Fern packs her van after the economic collapse in her rural Nevada town due to the local U.S. Gypsum plant closing.

The film was inspired by Jessica Bruder’s non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the 21st Century. Bruder’s book is centered on the accounts of post-recession contemporary nomads. Bruder spent years following nomads around the country to showcase their stories.
One of the most brilliant and captivating concepts behind the film, Nomadland, is that a few real-life nomads that Bruder observed over the years play themselves in the movie. Linda May, Swankie, and Bob Wells. In an interview with Variety, Swankie expressed how grateful she was to be a part of the film—stating that she felt more love from the film crew than her own biological family.

#Nomadland is a beautiful film and will probably remain one of my favorites of 2021 by the year’s end. It’s a great insightful depiction of the nomad life style that doesn’t implement any bias onto the viewer, thus allowing us to mold our own perception of the film’s story.
