Netflix Hit ‘Lucifer’ Finishes Filming After 6 Seasons
The beloved Netflix hit Lucifer finished filming its sixth and final season today, and fans are celebrating their favorite moments of the show with the widely circulating #thankyoulucifer. Season 5A was released in August 2020, but production halted in the second half of the season due to pandemic guidelines. Because of lost time, producers shifted right into filming the sixth and final season after wrapping the second half of the previous one. For months, fans were left in the dark as to when the hit show would return.
So while fans anxiously await season 5B, the announcement of a release date to Netflix on May 28 is of some comfort. Though the news – both of season 5B and the wrapping up of the final season – comes with the stark fact that Lucifer is, in fact, coming to an end after all these years.
Lucifer – a project from Warner Bros. Television – first aired in 2015 and has amassed a large following since then who have fought censorship campaigns against the show and numerous calls for cancellation; a nod to the legacy of the show and the fans themselves.

The series centers around the Devil, Lucifer Morningstar – played by Tom Ellis – as he navigates Los Angeles life through owning a nightclub and acting as a consultant for the LAPD. It took three seasons for the show to find its footing after receiving mixed reviews from critics and surprisingly low ratings. After being canceled by Fox in 2018, Netflix picked up the show and brought in rave reviews and high ratings.

Ellis himself shared some words of comfort for fans as the highly-anticipated news of a release date broke. In a retweet from Netflix, Ellis tells fans the news that they “truly desire” an ode to his character and the quasi-biblical themes present throughout Lucifer.

“We’ve been through this whole journey of cancellation, then #SaveLucifer, which was obviously incredible, and then when they renewed us, they said it was going to be the final season,” Ellis told The Wrap. “And it was only going to be 10 episodes, but then it was 16, and then they split it in half. So it’s this constant moving thing. But I have to appreciate that the reason it is a constant moving thing is the show has become so popular, so they just can’t kill it. It just won’t die. It’s been incredible.”
