Emma Stone and Emma Thompson Face-off in Newest Trailer For Disney’s ‘Cruella’
The second trailer for the upcoming Disney movie, Cruella, finds up-and-coming fashion designer Estella de Vil (Emma Stone), turning Baroness von Hellman’s advice (Emma Thompson) against her as she transforms into the iconic villain, Cruella de Vil. The trailer also gives audiences an inside look at the film’s take on the 1970s London fashion world with both Stone and Thompson dressed in over-the-top, elegant punk designs.
The trailer shows Walt Disney Studios’ vision for the 101 Dalmatians villain’s origin story. As de Vil’s creations turn the Baroness’s eye, de Vil begins her “killer” towards infamy. Thompson opens up the trailer by delivering the line, “Everyone else is an obstacle. You care what an obstacle wants or feels, you’re dead,” which sets into motion a dark, twisting feud between the two.
Audiences also see the juxtaposition of the Baroness’s jewels, cars, luxurious lifestyle with de Vil’s hard, manual labor, further signifying the differences between the characters. The trailer sets the mood for the upcoming film by including long looks at the fashion, makeup, and hairstyles worn by the characters.
While Stone and Thompson portray the film’s two leads, actors like Joel Fry (Game of Thrones), Paul Walter Hauser (BlacKkKlansman), Emily Beecham (Into the Badlands), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Barry), and Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes) also star.
Dana Fox and Tony McNamara wrote the screenplay, while Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel, and Steve Zissis provided the story. The titular character is an adaptation of Disney and Bill Peet film, One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), and Dodie Smith’s novel, The Hundred and One Dalamatians (1956).
Craig Gillespie directed the film, with Andrew Gunn, Marc Platt, and Kristin Burr producing. Glenn Close, who previously portrayed the dog-napping villain in 101 Dalmations and 102 Dalmatians, returns to Cruella de Vil’s world as an executive producer alongside Stone.
As part of building the world, Disney also authorized a young adult novel chronicling this version of Cruella de Vil, with Maureen Johnson (Truly Devious) writing the tie-in. Hello, Cruel Heart is available for purchase on Amazon.
Since the release of the trailer, fans have been expressed to Twitter their excitement for the upcoming film.
