Elliot Page shares about his coming-out journey and trans rights with Oprah Winfrey. On April 30, Apple TV+ debuted an interview where the actor opens up about the issues facing the trans community. Specifically, with many states in the U.S. passing and proposing anti-trans bills and legislation, the trans community and especially youth experiencing “horrible backlash.”

“It felt important and selfish for myself and my own well-being, and my mental health, and also with this platform I have, the privilege that I have, and knowing the pain and the difficulties and the struggles I faced in my life, let alone what so many other people are facing,” Page said in the interview. “It absolutely felt just crucial and important for me to share that.”

Page decided to have the interview with Winfrey because the anti-trans rhetoric is “intense” and “devastating.” He attributes these bills to the death of trans children and destroying their lives. Though Page is nervous when it comes to attention, he wanted to use this wide-reaching platform to share personal experiences and resources he has used.

From therapy to surgery, Page speaks from the heart in a genuine and vulnerable way. One way you can help is by visiting the Trans Athlete website created by Chris Mosier to spread awareness and help prevent some of the bills that infringe and take away trans rights. For example, there is a bill in the process of being passed in Alabama that makes it a felony for trans youth to get health care and essentially prevents doctors from doing their jobs.
