Netflix Announces ‘Emily in Paris’ Starts Production on Season 2
On Monday, May 3, Netflix announced that production for the second season of the comedic drama, Emily in Paris, is officially underway in France.
The show follows Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), a young woman from Chicago tasked with providing an American perspective at a French marketing firm. Along the way, Emily assimilates into the Parisian lifestyle, but not without encountering a few obstacles along the way. With the power of social media and relationships, Emily slowly begins to adjust to life in France.
To announce the production of season two, Netflix released the news through a fictional letter from Emily’s boss, Sylvie Grateau (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) that read:
“Je serai breve. We are writing to inform you that Emily Cooper’s new work permit has been approved with a start date of May 3, 2021. As per our prior correspondence, she is an asset to Savoir and we hope she continues to have impact with our clients who are very particular about the results they expect from their agency. As we often work with very unique brands, we hope that Emily continues to immerse herself culturally here in order not to make any egregious faux pas. We will continue to keep you updated on her progress and accomplishments in the coming months.”
Emily in Paris debuted last October, and according to a recent Academy of Television Arts and Sciences panel, amassed 58 million households in its first 28 days on Netflix, making it the streaming site’s most-watched comedy of 2020. Darren Star, best known for the HBO favorite, Sex and the City, created the show.
“As an actor, an artist, and a creative, the most meaningful gift is to connect with people through your art in some way. It’s an honor to be associated with a project that provided people with some much-needed relief during a trying time when everyone was looking for a reason to smile and laugh,” lead actress Lilly Collins stated in a press release. “Not only did playing Emily teach me more about myself, but also about the world around me. I couldn’t be happier to be back in Paris for Season 2 to expand upon those lessons, to continue to grow, and learn even more about this beautiful city and all of its character with Emily.”
“From the beginning, we always wanted to create this beautiful cinematic view of Paris,” creator Darren star explained. “The timing of the series release was fortuitous for us as everyone around the world was able to become armchair travelers and live vicariously through our cast. We could not be more proud and are excited to bring more joy to our fans as we start production on Season 2.”
The new season will bring back the cast, including Collins, Ashley Park (Mindy), Bravo, William Abadie (Antoine), Samuel Arnold (Julien), Leroy-Beaulieu, Bruno Gouery (Luc), and Camille Razat (Camille). Although the plot is still a mystery, Star has mentioned that Emily will embrace French culture more in the second season in response to some backlash arguing that the series is culturally insensitive. The writers are also reportedly exploring queer romances, more fashion moments, and a lot of evolution for Emily’s character.
