Coldplay’s New Single ‘Higher Power’ – A Gift From Above (Literally)
On Thursday, May 6, Coldplay released a new single titled “Higher Power.” Unlike past tracks, Coldplay went above and beyond by debuting the song from outer space.
“You’ve got a higher power/ Got me singing every second/ Dancing every hour,” Chris Martin chimes in the chorus. With “Higher Power” being the first new Coldplay song since the group’s 2019 album Everyday Life, fans are beyond grateful and excited for such an uplifting comeback. The upbeat bop’s accompanying music video features dancing alien holograms, which added to the unique galaxy-like theme. So far, the British band’s music video has gained more than 7 million views and 193 thousand likes on YouTube.

“Higher Power” premiered onboard the International Space Station. In fact, astronaut Thomas Pesquet was the first to listen. “The song is about trying to find the astronaut in all of us, the person that can do amazing things,” frontman Chris Martin explained in the group’s conversation with Pesquet. Fans suspect “Higher Power” to be a single off of a forthcoming album. However, as of now, music-lovers continue to wait in suspense.
Meanwhile, vocalist Chris Martin made a guest appearance on American Idol on May 9. The episode had a Coldplay theme, so contestants performed various songs from the British rock band. Martin graciously acted as a mentor by providing advice to the performers. Casey Bishop was one of many contestants to perform on the special episode. Bishop, 15, amazed both judges and viewers away with her cover of the iconic song “Paradise.” Of course, a Coldplay episode wouldn’t be complete without a performance from the band itself. Coldplay delivered a colorful performance of the new single “Higher Power.”
Coldplay will be performing at the Brit Awards on Tuesday, May 11, and is in the lineup at the Glastonbury Festival’s virtual Live at Worthy Farm livestream on May 22nd.
