Apple Original Films & A24 Partner on New Drama, ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth,’ Starring Frances McDormand and Denzel Washington

Apple Original Films and A24 have made a deal to release a new drama, The Tragedy of Macbeth featuring a critically acclaimed cast and production team. The film will star two-time Academy-Award winner Denzel Washington in the titular role and Frances McDormand, who recently won her third Oscar for Best Actress in Nomadland, as Lady Macbeth. While director Joel Coen, who has won four Academy Awards, usually collaborates with his brother and fellow director, Ethan Coen, The Tragedy of Macbeth marks his solo directorial debut. According to Apple, The film will be released in theaters worldwide later this year ahead of a global launch on Apple TV+.

Washington and McDormand will be joined on-screen by Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Kathryn Hunter, Harry Melling, and Brendan Gleeson. Behind the scenes, Coen will be working with many team members he has collaborated with in the past, such as Oscar-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres (La La Land, Fargo) and cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel (Amélie, Paris, je t’aime). Music will be by Carter Burwell (Carol, Twilight), making it his seventeenth collaboration with Coen. The film will be produced by Joel Coen, Frances McDormand, and Robert Graf. The film is already anticipated to receive widespread recognition and award nominations.

The film adaptation of the Shakespeare classic will join the list of distinguished films from Apple Original Films and A24 collaborations, including  “On The Rocks,” from Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola, and starring Rashida Jones and Bill Murray, as well as the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner “Boys State” and the upcoming YA adaptation “The Sky is Everywhere,” directed by Josephine Decker and starring Grace Kaufman, Cherry Jones, and Jason Segel.

Apple Original Films is home to award-winning and critically acclaimed productions including Oscar, BAFTA, People’s Choice, and Critics Choice Super Award-nominated “Greyhound” written by and starring Tom Hanks,  NAACP Image Award-winner “The Banker,” a film tackling racial injustice, starring Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony and Joe Russo’s new film “Cherry,” starring Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo, and global hit film “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry” from director R.J. Cutler.
