At the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown, Nichols began writing her inspiring book How Far You Have Come. The book is a collection of poetry and essays about a road trip Nichols took from Georgia to California, with each state given a unique story. Diving deeper into the meaning, the book is a message of courage to those looking to their futures but also facing major uncertainty in the present. While writing the book, Nichols wanted readers to take time “to honor our journeys and honor our progress.”

A couple of years ago, Nichols photographed the cover of How Far You Have Come in New Mexico. Nichols told R29Unbothered, “I was in a really uncertain season of my life when that photo was taken, and that led me on this journey of looking at other moments in my life that have been like that.” She continued, “I’ve been somewhere that was aesthetically beautiful and at the same time there was internal struggle happening.”

In other news, the 31-year-old writer opened up about the struggles leading up to her recent autism diagnosis. Unfortunately, the writer encountered multiple people, even a doctor, who dismissed her. For advice to other Black autistic women going through similar experiences, Nichols explained, “Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone, even if they don’t have the same diagnosis, even if it’s just someone that you can text when you’re about to go into the doctor’s office.”
