Girl Group GFRIEND Decides to End Contract With Source Music
After debuting in January of 2015, K-pop girl group GFRIEND has decided to cut ties with their longtime company, Source Music. According to an article from a K-pop news outlet, Soompi, the six members have each decided not to renew their contract and go their separate ways.
On May 18, in a statement, Source Music announced that “After careful consideration and extensive discussion, GFRIEND and Source Music have agreed to follow separate paths to continued growth.”
It is unclear if each of the girls will start solo careers or possibly stay together at another label, but their former company also made it clear that “We would like to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to GFRIEND who has allowed Source Music to accompany them on their journey,” showing support for the girls wherever this decision may take them.

According to the release, the girl group’s contract does not officially end until May 22, so the news of the contract break is quite early. Fans across social media are hoping this doesn’t mean the end for their favorite girl group. Only time will tell, especially with the group still being under contract until later this week.

GFRIEND has been a long contender in the world of K-pop, debuting around the same time as some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Blackpink and ‘labelmates’ BTS. The group consists of six members, including Sowon, Ye-rin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB, and Umji, and have released countless hits such as ‘Me Gustas Tu’ and most recently ‘Mago’ from their Walpurgis Night album. The group is best known for their ”powerful innocent” concept having an “orchestral and sentimental sound.”
On top of the girls’ sound, their music videos often tell a story in a way that only GFRIEND could do. Their videos are rich in color and often have an element of mystery or fantasy to them. The girls consistently put out great songs, and many of their fans hope they can sign with another label or possibly reach followers with solo music from some of their members.
There is currently no word on if this means the group will disband, but hopefully, more news should out in the coming days.
