Remembering George Floyd One Year Later
George Floyd, a father, a loving husband, and a black man in America was killed by police one year ago on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Celebrities and people all around the world are remembering the life of George Floyd and his legacy. From leading protests/marches to painting murals, Americans are speaking out against the racial injustice and police brutality that led to the tragic killing of an unarmed African American male.
Floyd’s family met with President Biden and Vice President Harris at the White House for over an hour on Tuesday, May 25. Soon after, members of the family met with congressional leaders, including Speaker Pelosi. Efforts to pass a legislation bill in George Floyd’s name to address police reform have currently been stalled.
ABC News posted a video of the family raising their fists and saying Floyd’s name in solidarity outside the White House. “Say his name.. say it loud.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama and Former President Barack Obama posted words of support for the family on Instagram, along with an encouraging message for Americans to continue speaking out against “our own experiences of injustice and discrimination.”
On April 20, a verdict was reached in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the officer involved in the killing of George Floyd, who was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and, second-degree manslaughter. At the time of the conviction, it seemed that George Floyd’s family could have a sense of peace knowing that the officer responsible for the death of Floyd was being held accountable.
Even though it was a step in the right direction, despite this, more cases of police brutality and the killing of black men and women rose as media organizations released information about the murder of Daunte Wright, Ma’Khia Bryant, and Breonna Taylor.
One year later, people around the world honor the life of George Floyd. Members of the #BlackLivesMatter community will continue fighting for the racial injustices and discriminations that still exist in America today.
