REVIEW: The God of Mischief Is Back in New Disney+ Series, ‘Loki’
Tom Hiddleston is back as Loki in one of the most anticipated Disney+ series, Loki. The trickster god is back in action and we love it! Loki, the new Disney+ series, premiered today and is a continuation of the character Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Loki is a fan favorite. He’s charming, witty, and cunning. He knows what he wants and we love him for that. Glitter was able to screen episodes 1 and 2 in advance so if you don’t want slight spoilers, stop reading, but if you want our thoughts on where they may be going with the next episodes, read on.
Loki picks up where Avengers: Endgame leaves off with him disappearing after picking up the Tesseract. The only problem is that Loki was never meant to pick up the Tesseract. He should have died, and yet, he didn’t. This version of Loki ended up in an alternate reality of sorts, in a place called the Time Variance Authority or the TVA. The TVA knows everyone’s past, present, and future. They are the time keepers and oversee all of time. They’re tasked with keeping people on track.
As soon as Loki enters the TVA, he’s sentenced by Judge Ravonna Renslayer, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, to be reset. We never find out what being reset entails though we suspect it would basically wipe Loki’s existence completely. Poof, gone completely. This “lesser Loki” is saved by Agent Mobius, played by Owen Wilson. The Loki that everyone remembers dies at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but this isn’t that more conniving Loki. This is a Loki plucked from an earlier timeline.
Agent Mobius has an interesting proposition for this Loki. He needs Loki’s help to find, well, Loki. Loki has been causing all kind of havoc, across several timelines, and the TVA needs to stop him before Loki splits the sacred timeline into a million pieces, causing mass destruction. They need this Loki’s help because the one who is currently killing the time variants is Loki, or at least one of the versions of Loki. We all have several.
Throughout the first two episodes, Agent Mobius watches Loki’s every move in order to figure out what makes him tick. Mobius notices that not only is this variant talkative, he also likes to stall for time and in order to catch the past variant, he needs to study this variant. The other one tasked with watching Loki is Hunter B-15, played by Wunmi Mosaku. Her comedic timing is perfect. Her interaction with Loki is golden.
Curious, Loki wants to know everything about the creation of the TVA as well as the beginning and the end of time, but he soon comes to find out that’s all classified. Loki is given one file on the destruction of Asgard, which Loki caused. It’s in reading this file that he realizes that there is zero variant energy detected. Nexis events aren’t supposed to happen and yet they are.
In Pompeii, right before Mount Vesuvius erupts in 79 A.D., Loki lets the goats go and tells the people they’re going to die. Because zero variant energy is detected, Loki finds a flaw inside the TVA, and it’s a concern of the TVA’s. A flaw in their perfect system is not something that they want.
The team then travels to Haven Hills, Alabama in the future to try and catch this Loki at the Roxxcart Apocalypse at the storm shelter. It’s there that the team, consisting of Loki, Agent Mobius, and Hunter B-15, along with a few other hunters, break into smaller teams to catch this destructive Loki in action.
Hunter B-15 ends up with Loki and they search the shelter and find this green glow that overtakes people, including Hunter B-15 at one point. Loki faces someone who we think might be Lady Loki. She tells this Loki that it’s not about him, and she waves and jumps into a time portal. In resetting the timelines like she does, it causes the sacred timeline to split and branch into a million tiny branches causing mass panic back at the TVA.
This leaves us with a few questions. Can time be permanently damaged? Just how many universes are there? Does destroying the sacred timeline ruin it for all the universes in existence? What role does the TVA really play? Which historical events will Loki be involved in for the future episodes? Why didn’t the TVA step in during Avengers: Endgame or during Infinity War?
Is someone inside the TVA simply playing friend, but actually a foe? At first, we thought it might have been Agent Mobius, but he really is too goody-two-shoes to be the villain. Our money is on Judge Renslayer. She works directly with the three heads of the TVA, these godlike creatures.
Renslayer would be the one with the most access to all the information since she dictates the flow of time according to what the heads of the TVA dictate to her. Plus, we’re pretty sure she’s tied to Kang the Conqueror, which makes us wonder, will we see Kang the Conqueror at some point in the series as well?
We’re dying to find out. These first two episodes have us salivating for more ASAP. Kate Herron directs, Michael Waldron is the head writer, and Kevin Feige is one of the executive producers on this thrilling new series.
Don’t miss one of our favorite Marvel series so far! New episodes on Disney+ every Wednesday. Don’t blink or you might miss something in this thrilling time-travel adventure that answers the question, would you destroy yourself if it meant saving the world? We can’t wait to see what this mischievous scamp will do next.
