Megan Rapinoe Advocates for Equal Pay and Gender Equality
Megan Rapinoe and the entire woman’s US soccer team take action in fighting for equal pay among all athletes regardless of their gender. Due to the recent studies that show how the men’s US team receives on average $20k more than the women do annually, the team decided to file a gender discrimination lawsuit against the United States Soccer Federation in 2019. The women’s team has recently received attention on the continued fight for equal pay after releasing the trailer for their documentary, which will cover the team’s efforts to achieve equal pay in detail.
Rapinoe takes a major role in this trailer, making her one of the main faces of the movement. Fans admire her passionate contributions towards change and can easily tell how much this pay gap has affected her. She does an exceptional job of expressing her frustration as well as providing evidence which explains her motives.

Rapinoe states in the trailer, “The story’s the same everywhere… women get paid less than men.” She highlights that her team is not the only group of victims, but all women in professional sports and other male-dominated jobs who are also experiencing unfair pay in each paycheck.

What angers our US women’s team most is how successful they’ve been in their past tournaments compared to the men. Our women’s team has received four Olympic gold medals and won four World Cup Championships, while the men’s team has never received an Olympic medal or even won a World Cup. This is outrageous considering the maximum salary for women is equal to the men’s reserve minimum salary at $56k annually. This allows the men’s team to receive up to $300k annually while the women’s salary is strictly stopped at $56k.
I’m so excited for the #LFG movie on @hbomax. I’m so ready for this #summerofsoccer

Hopefully, the new “LFG” movie releasing shortly will provide fans with more in-depth detail on how Rapinoe and the US team are fighting for equal pay and equality. If all goes well, their movie should be a major step forwards for their movement by increasing awareness and supporters as well as demanding an increase in their future salaries.
