Lorde released her critically-acclaimed second studio album Melodrama on June 15, 2017. After four long years, fans of the talented singer have anxiously awaited new music. In this four-year period, Lorde has released one single, “Solar Power” with backing vocals by Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo.

Melodrama is the follow-up album to Lorde’s debut studio album, Pure Heroine. Her debut album made history at the Grammys, where Lorde won two Grammys for “Song of the Year” and “Best Pop Performance” for her hit single “Royals” at just seventeen. After such a powerful debut, fans were waiting for more, and she certainly delivered, four years later.

After her debut release in 2013, by 2017, Lorde took her fans on a rollercoaster of emotions with Melodrama. The album explores what it truly means to live in your twenties. She wrote much of the album when she was eighteen and nineteen, the years before she would transition to her twenties or real adult life. It is a pivotal moment in one’s life, and she garnered a lot of support and praise from fans for its relatability.

Melodrama marked Lorde’s first time collaborating with Jack Antonoff, a giant in the industry. When speaking to Rolling Stone of the writing process, he reveals, “Let’s just gather around a piano and see how you’re feeling, and see what has happened to you since your last album that’s really worth sharing.” Antonoff co-produced and co-wrote every track on the album, proving the duo to be a perfect pair.

Many of Lorde’s songs had been born out of the daily hustle and bustle of New York life: She tuned out the world and listened to music when boarding the trains and cabs. In one of her most famous stories, she tells audiences that her ballad “Liability” had been inspired by Rihanna’s song, “Higher.”

After four years, fans still have difficulty expressing what Melodrama means to them. Lorde had created magic with Antonoff. Melodrama has left many shedding tears while also celebrating the record with endless dancing. Melodrama is the album that takes fans to those perfect places.

In honor of this special day, be sure to stream Melodrama on Spotify and Apple Music. Lorde already has a new era beginning, but Melodrama will always be super special.
