Connie Britton Discusses Being the Mother of Her Black Son
Actress Connie Britton recently opened up about raising her 10-year-old Black son, Eyob, while being a white woman in the wake of racial unrest.
Connie Britton appeared on July 13’s episode of The View, where she discussed raising Eyob, whom she adopted from Ethiopia ten years ago. The Joe Bell star reflected on the privilege she has grown up in because she is white, but “…At the same time, I’m raising a Black boy in America.” She said that this past year of racial unrest has been “complicated and painful.”

Britton said about her son, “I will fight to the end for him.” When asked about the conversations she is having with Eyob during the country’s racial reckoning, she said, “I have to learn as much as I can, educate him as much as I can, about not only where he’s from and who he is. And we’ve done that from day 1, but also help him understand what’s happening in the world.”
Back in November of 2020, when Joe Biden was voted President, Britton hoped that this would be a win for her son. She wrote on Instagram, “I am crying with gratitude for all the people who came out to vote and worked so hard to ensure that America didn’t fall prey to another 4 years of tyranny and division. And personally that my son won’t turn 13 after enduring 8 years of it.”
In January, Britton shared the heartwarming story of how she adopted Eyob with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live. She recalled, “I knew that I wanted to be a mom.” After losing both her parents within three years and not having a steady romantic relationship, she asked herself, “What am I waiting for? I know I want to adopt. I can do this.”
