This past Saturday, a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck Haiti, leaving at least 1,941 people dead and more than 5,000 injured. In the devastating aftermath, here are ways you can help no matter how far you are.

The Haitian government declared a state of emergency after a deadly quake struck the country, destroying over 13,000 homes and blocked essential roads that would carry vital supplies.

The earthquake struck southwestern Haiti around 8:29 am on Saturday, August 14, 2021, following a series of tremors. According to CNN, the location was about 60 miles west of the area that the disastrous 2010 earthquake hit, which left 220,000 to 300,000 dead.

Although this past weekend’s earthquake was far less damaging, the country still has not fully recovered from the previous disaster and is now in even more great need of aid. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs told CNN:

“The most urgent humanitarian needs are expected to be linked to the provision of medical assistance and water, sanitation and hygiene.”

In addition, Haiti is still grappling with the loss of their late president, Jovenel Moise, who was assassinated on July 7th, along with the pandemic, gang violence, and widespread poverty. It is without a doubt that the country is in complete turmoil and great need of aid.

Here are five organizations you can donate to right now:

  1. Hope For Haiti: One of the most trusted humanitarian relief organizations aiming to improve the quality of life for the Haitian people. This non-profit is working to provide emergency kits, healthcare, and many other resources.
  2. The Haiti Emergency Relief Fund: Works to collect donations and sends the money directly to organizations in Haiti. After Hurricane Matthew, it provided aid to support healthcare workers and to provide medicine and food for victims.
  3. Haiti Communitere: This Port Au Prince based organization engages with community members to address needs and provide emergency support.
  4. FOKAL Haiti Relief: Works to channel donations from Haiti’s grassroots women’s organizations and a list of other local frontline organizations.
  5. Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres: For 30 years, They have been providing a medical staff team that provides medical care in areas that have experienced the hardest hit.
