Lil Nas X Ties with Olivia Rodrigo By Winning the Most Awards at VMAs
Lil Nas X swept the 2021 VMAs. Besides slaying in his lavender suit and putting on a stellar performance, the rapper 22, took home a number of awards: Video of the Year, Best Direction, and Best Visual Effects, all for his hit song “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name).”
In addition to the iconic outfit and performance, the “Industry Baby” gave an iconic speech when accepting his award for Video of the Year. “First, I want to say thank you to the gay agenda. Let’s go, gay agenda! I love you guys so much. I will not take this for granted.”

This isn’t Lil Nas X’s first award at the VMAs. In 2019, he won two awards for Best Song and Best Direction. The artist rose to fame back in 2018 when his song “Old Town Road” went viral on the popular app TikTok. From there, he would do the “Yeehaw Challenge” which would make the song an overnight phenomenon, becoming the number 1 song in history on Billboard’s Hot 100 for nineteen weeks. Furthermore, the song landed on the Hot Country Song Charts and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs simultaneously.

In addition to being an artist, Lil Nas X is an activist and a strong advocate for mental health. This year, he opened up about his battles with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, relationship issues, and growing up with his mother’s struggles with addiction in a series of candid TikTok videos. He used his platform to speak out about mental health, thus awarded by The Trevor Project for raising awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.
