Recently, Demi Lovato shared how they discovered that they were non-binary. The ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ singer, 29, sat with Becky-G (real name Rebecca Marie Gomez) in an interview, sharing how they realized they were non-binary. It was during quarantine and through meditation when the singer made this discovery.

The singer stated, “I started learning so much about myself during quarantine. I started meditating and I had meditated in the years before but nothing like what happened in quarantine. When I started assessing my spirituality, I realized my masculine energy was just as prominent as my feminine energy. I came to the conclusion, I identify as non-binary and gender non-conforming.”

After coming to this realization, Lovato felt it was important to share the news about their newfound gender identity, hoping to encourage people to come out and accept themselves.

“And I just want people out there to know, especially young people who are entering a world where they might not feel secure or scared to come out. I want to show people that it’s OK and it feels really, really great.”

Back in May, Lovato came out as non-binary and their new pronouns on their podcast, 4D with Demi Lovato.

“Over the past year and a half I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work and through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and am still discovering.”

Back in August, Lovato shared how their gender is a journey. “Yes, I definitely think it’s a journey forever. There might be a time where I identify as trans, I don’t know what this looks like for me. There might be a time where I identify as nonbinary and gender non-conforming my entire life, or maybe there’s a period of time when I get older that I identify as a woman.

“I don’t know what that looks like, but for me at this moment right now, this is how I identify. And I have a feeling that it’s not going to ever go back to one way or the other, but it’s about keeping it open and free. I’m a very fluid person, and so that goes with how I express myself as well.”
