The family of Lauren Smith-Fields is demanding justice for the death of their loved one. After meeting a white man on Bumble, Lauren was found deceased in her apartment. When the family of Lauren Smith asked if the man was taken into custody, the Bridgepoint police department told her family, “ he seems like a great guy.”

Many Black Americans are upset about the lack of national attention the case receives. People are starting to compare Lauren’s situation with Gabby Petito, Gabby was a young White woman who went missing after taking a hiking trip with her boyfriend. After weeks of national coverage, they soon found her body. In Lauren’s case, justice has still not been served due to the hostility of the Bridgepoint police department.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the family lawyer expressed his frustration with the case.“When a white woman goes missing, the whole world drops everything. We are done with this valuation,” the family’s lawyer stated.

In a press conference on Sunday, the family stated that they have hired an attorney, and plan to sue the county for mishandling their daughter’s case. They also plan to bring in a private company to investigate her death in depth.

After losing their 23-year-old daughter, the family has come up with three demands to help bring justice for Lauren:

  1. The case be investigated by state police and the AG’s Office
  2. A transparent investigation by IA
  3. A Bill in Lauren’s honor to notify families of death in a timely manner

The family is asking that you help them in demanding justice for Lauren. On January 23, 2022, the family will host a Rally/ birthday celebration for Lauren. They ask that you bring signs, banners, posters and wear pink in her honor. The family will be marching from the Bridgepoint Police Station to the Margaret E Norton Government Center.
