Aritzia’s Popular Collection Perfect for the Lunar New Year
Just in time for the new year, Aritzia released a lunar-themed collection that nearly sold out in less than a week. Take a look at their beautiful red collection collaborated with Debbie Tea, an illustrator from Jakarta.
The Vancouver-based company partnered with Debbie Tea and released their collection, “Year of the Tiger.” The collection is filled with comfortable fleece sweaters, sweatpants, and shorts that showcased Tea’s artwork. All of her original characters are inspired by her Chinese Lunar New Year.
“My Chinese zodiac sign’s the Tiger. Ambitious, passionate, fiery, and very protective of people and things I truly love”, said Tea. Tea illustrated courageous tigers, bok choy, delicious noodles, and other cute characters in the vibrant red loungewear sets. The Jakarta-based artist represented all of these characters and animals doing the lion dance on clothing.
Tea also included the meaning behind her food illustration on Aritzia’s website.
“Noodles represent happiness and long life. They say the longer your noodle is, the longer your life will be.”
“Dumplings represent wealth since their shape is similar to ancient Chinese money. Some believe that eating dumplings would give heavenly blessings.”
“Bok choy represents wealth, good harvest, and prosperity. In Cantonese, ‘bok’ means hundred and ‘Choy’ means wealth; when combined, the meaning becomes ‘100 years of wealth’.”
“Mandarin oranges represent wealth. The more oranges you eat during Lunar New Year, the wealthier you’ll be.”
Tea’s Instagram featured all of the characters that she’s illustrated in detail. She tells all of her supporters that the collection was a fun (and nostalgic) experience. All of her characters are inspired by her own home. She put a spin on the adorable characters with her experiences during Chinese New Year dinners. To check out more of her artwork, you can take a look at her website along with her store that sells her artworks and merchandise.
On Tea’s website, she tells fans that she has a “soft spot for nostalgia.” She’s also heavily inspired by the mundane and abstraction in general. She’s worked alongside many other artists and bands to showcase her artwork. And now, she teamed up with Aritzia to work on a collection inspired by her family and background.
