As case counts decrease, one of the most effective ways to mitigate the spread of the pandemic is through covid tests.

To order four free COVID-19 tests, visit COVIDtests.gov. If the first set of free tests were ordered through the government, the second round of tests are available starting now. These comprise the second half of the billion tests the Biden Administration purchased to combat the pandemic. 500 million tests were made available on January 19. The plan also includes 10 million more tests per month for schools to help kids and teachers get back into classrooms safely.

The Biden Administration rolled out a plan beginning in January that allowed households to order four COVID-19 tests to their home at no cost. Criticisms arose due to the limit of one order per household, leaving larger families out of luck under this plan. People can also purchase tests from their pharmacies, with insurance companies providing reimbursement.

COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have decreased recently as the omicron wave has ebbed and the percent of the eligible population at least partially vaccinated has reached 81.4%. As of March 2, the 7-day moving average of 53,017 cases is a 28.5% decrease from the week prior’s of 74,143 cases. Hospitalizations were down 30.3% from the week prior. As of March 8, the CDC reports that 79,165,308 people in the United States have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Tragically, 957,752 people have lost their lives due to the disease throughout the pandemic.
