Turning Red Becomes Number One New Film Premiere on Disney+
Turning Red has been nominated as the number one film premiere on Disney+ globally for its impressive amount of views and fantastic storyline. Directed and co-written by Domee Shi, Turning Red is an international comfort film.
The animated feature film follows 13-year-old Meilin Lin (Rosalie Chiang) in the early 2000s. Mei lives in Toronto with her family and supportive friends. The movie doesn’t simply exhibit Mei’s coming-of-age story, but she also connects with her inner self. Mei is portrayed as a goody-goody honor student who only listens to her somewhat overprotective but loving mother, Ming Lee (Sandra Oh). However, Mei’s life changes drastically when she wakes up as a giant red panda.
This heartfelt and comedic movie is one of Pixar’s prize films. Turning Red is not only directed solely by a woman but also has the studio’s first Asian lead character. The animated movie was released on March 11 on Disney+. Turning Red received rave reviews from film critics and audiences.
According to the film’s official Twitter account, Turning Red was nominated as the number one film premiere globally on Disney+ on March 16. The tweet states, “Thank you to all of the fans around the world who embraced their panda and made Disney and Pixar’s #TurningRed the #1 film premiere on Disney+ around the world!”

Fans are in love with Shi’s new animated motion picture. Turning Red is not only a heartfelt and funny movie but is also a comfort film. Especially with Mei’s character, who is extremely sweet and someone that we can relate to deeply.
The way I sobbed when I saw the pads in #TurningRed. Women are so often reduced to smaller versions of themselves, either sexualized or non-existent. To see a film list out different kinds of hygiene products with such normalcy was moving. pic.twitter.com/XYRcnRBDJK
