Florence + the Machine Release New Song ‘Free’
Florence Welch, frontwoman of the rock band Florence + the Machine, announced the fourth single, “Free,” off the band’s fifth studio album, Dance Fever, releasing May 15. The record is produced by Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff and Glass Animals’ Dave Bayley.
After the exciting news of a new Florence + the Machine record earlier this year, fans could not contain their excitement for what was to come. Welch shared the name of the record, Dance Fever, on March 10. A little over a month later and fans already have four singles to bless their ears and hearts: “King,” “Heaven Is Here,” “My Love,” and “Free.”
Welch took to Instagram to post a stunning starry-blue photograph of herself with the single’s title resting under the photo. The “Free” track is a strong rocker detailing Welch’s battle with anxiety. “Free” soars to the highest of heights. The song exhibits a special power for its masterful portrayal of anxiety, particularly the song’s message about music’s ability to make one’s anxiety disappear, even if it is for a brief moment.
The singer gave a candid interview with Vogue in 2019, discussing anxiety, recovery, and happiness. She revealed, “I am still trying to understand what makes young women go to war with themselves. But the judgment choir never stopped singing. It still sings now, though not as loudly or as often.”

Florence + the Machine shared an accompanying music video to “Free,” directed by Autumn de Wilde. She has directed every Dance Fever single video so far. “Free” stars Welch as herself, with English actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually) portraying Welch’s anxiety.
We cannot be more excited to hear the remaining tracks off Florence + the Machine’s Dance Fever. The “Free” music video is available to watch above. The band’s music can be streamed on all major music platforms.
