Fans of Florence + the Machine can rejoice in knowing that a new record will be out this Friday. Florence Welch, frontwoman of the indie-rock band, Florence + the Machine, appeared as a musical guest rocking an all-red Rodarte ensemble for her appearance. During the performance, Welch dances barefoot and commands the stage with her theatrics.

The “King” singer discussed her Florence + the Machine identity as a manifestation of her childhood fascinations. She says that the band name is “an amalgamation of things that I loved when I was a kid. It is essentially a mix of Rogue from X-Men with a Victorian ghost, and then, like, mermaids, and I wonder if one day I’ll wake up and I’m back in my childhood bed and it was a dream.”

Dance Fever, according to Welch is a “fairytale in 14 songs.” Autumn de Wilde, photographer and director behind the band’s music videos and cover art, calls Welch an “electric genius.” She elaborates on the band’s upcoming record, “I started to feel like the record she was making was very honest, very raw and modern, but also rich with otherworldly fantasy. I wanted to create a visual escape hatch into an ancient fairy tale.”

Welch candidly spoke about her theatric performances, stating, “I feel like as a female artist you spend a lot of time screaming into the void for people to take you seriously, in a way that male artists just don’t have to do.” At the end of the day, she became “so tired of trying to prove myself to people who are never going to get it.” So she stopped, and it ultimately liberated her.

Dance Fever will be released on May 13. Fans can secure tickets to one of Florence + the Machine’s North American Tour dates for Dance Fever now.
