In less than a month since the show’s triumphant return, judge Matthew Morrison has been fired from So You Think You Can Dance. A few days after the second round of auditions aired, the shocking news vaguely mentioned that Morrison broke “competition production protocols.”

It was revealed that Morrison was having a one-sided, inappropriate encounter with a female contestant. A close source told PEOPLE, “It was just messages that crossed the line… She felt uncomfortable with his line of comments and went to producers, who then got Fox involved. He was fired after they did their own investigation.”

At first, viewers speculated that he broke protocols relating to COVID, or he might not have disclosed that he knew a contestant before filming due to the lack of specificity in Morrison’s announcement.

Morrison stated, “Having the opportunity to be a judge on So You Think You Can Dance was an incredible honor for me. Therefore, it is my deepest regret to inform you that I will be leaving the show…After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly… I cannot apologize enough to all involved, and I will be watching alongside you all on what I know will be one of the best seasons yet.”

The first wave of the season, including the audition rounds and choreography round, were pretaped; therefore, Morrison will appear on the judging panel until June 15, when the top 12 finalists will compete in a series of live tapings.

There is no word yet on who will occupy Morrison’s seat at the judges’ table alongside Jojo Siwa and Steven “tWitch” Boss. Viewers are hoping for a new face or the return of executive producer and former judge Nigel Lythgoe, who was not asked to judge this season, to bring new faces to the show.

Despite the controversy, the show must go on, and this week marks the third round of auditions as we’re one step closer to crowning America’s (new) favorite dancer. So You Think You Can Dance airs Wednesday nights at 9/8c on Fox and the next day on Hulu.
