Not only was this special intended to get the crowd ready for the main show, but Act One was also specifically dedicated to highlighting the work of Broadway’s finest creative and design teams. During the special, awards were given for Best Choreography, Best Lighting Design, Best Costume Design, etc.

After the hour-long pre-show, the main show kicked off with another extravagant performance from DeBose. The performance “This Is Your Round of Applause” honored the show’s 75-year anniversary with a medley from several musicals like Chicago, Cabaret, Hairspray, and Hamilton.

Aside from the fantastic performance, DeBose made sure to shout out all of the swings, understudies, and standbys who kept Broadway moving this year as COVID cases fluctuated. Also mentioned in her monologue were the significant contributions made by BIPOC and LGBTQ+ performers. DeBose stated, “Theater, is becoming more reflective of the community who adores it.”
