Amid this Court’s cruel assault on Americans’ health, freedom and security, she will be a much needed force for equal justice for all.
Born in Washington D.C and raised in Miami, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson started her career as a law clerk for many judges such as Judge Patti Saris from 1996 to 1997, Justice Bruce Selya from 1997 to 1998, and Justice Breyer from 1999 to 2000. In 2010, she was nominated and confirmed by the Senate to serve as the Vice-Chair of the U.S Sentencing Commission by President Obama and worked her way to becoming the district court judge in Washington DC in 2013. President Joe Biden nominated Jackson to become the 116th Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on February 25. The Senate later confirmed her nomination in April.
The 51-year-old judge will be stepping into her duties less than a week after the Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Other rights have been attacked over the past couple of weeks such as Miranda rights, gun rights, and separation of church and education.
The swearing-in of Ketanji Brown Jackson is a huge step in diversifying the Supreme Court and our government. Readers can watch her swear into office here.
